Aharon Ipalé

Aharon Ipalé was a Moroccan-born Israeli actor whose career moved confidently between stage, television and film, as well as between Britain, the United States and Israel. Born on December 27, 1941, he arrived in Mandatory Palestine with his family at the age of two, during the early migration of Moroccan Jews to Israel. After serving in the Israeli Army, he enrolled at a theater school in London and began appearing in British stage productions and television series. An early leading role came in the television miniseries Christ Recrucified, in which Ipalé played Jesus Christ. He later appeared as Joshua opposite Burt Lancaster’s Moses in the 1973–1974 British miniseries Moses the Lawgiver. That performance brought him attention from Hollywood and opened the way to decades of work in American television. Ipalé became a reliable presence across some of the most familiar series of the 1970s and 1980s, including Hawaii Five-O, Wonder Woman, Kojak, Dynasty, Taxi, Knight Rider, MacGyver, Miami Vice, The Love Boat and Charlie’s Angels. In Knight Rider, he played Durant, the man responsible for killing Michael Knight’s fiancée Stephanie Mason during their wedding ceremony in the fourth-season episode “Scent of Roses.” His film work was similarly wide-ranging. In 1985, he appeared in the British drama The Shooting Party and the Israeli film Gesher Tzar Me’od, followed by a role in Ishtar in 1987. For many viewers, however, his most familiar screen work came later, when he played Pharaoh Seti I in Stephen Sommers’ The Mummy and returned for The Mummy Returns. He also appeared in Charlie Wilson’s War in 2007. After decades spent living and working in London and Los Angeles, Ipalé returned to Israel around 2012. He died in 2016, leaving behind a career shaped by international productions, historical roles and an assured presence across several generations of popular television and film.
