Afemo Omilami
Afemo Omilami has built a wide-ranging screen career through performances that bring weight and credibility to both major films and television dramas. Born Kenneth Lee in Petersburg, Virginia, on December 13, 1950, the American actor has appeared in projects spanning historical drama, comedy, sports stories, thrillers and science fiction. For many viewers, Omilami is best known as the Drill Sergeant in Forrest Gump, a brief but sharply defined role in one of the most widely recognized films of the 1990s. His film work also includes Trading Places, Glory, The Firm, Gordy, Remember the Titans, Ray, Hounddog, The Blind Side and Terminator Genisys. Taken together, those credits show a performer able to move comfortably between very different kinds of movies without losing his grounded presence. Television has provided another substantial side of his career. From 1989 to 1993, Omilami appeared in a recurring role as the streetwise Jimmy Dawes on In the Heat of the Night. He later played Drum Eatenton in Lifetime’s Steel Magnolias, earning a 2013 NAACP Image Award nomination in the category of Actor in a Television Movie, Mini-Series or Dramatic Special. His television appearances have also included guest roles on Miami Vice, Fortune Hunter, New York News, The Shield, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders and Raising Dion. Omilami’s filmography is marked less by one narrow screen identity than by its range. Whether appearing in a period piece, a contemporary drama or a large-scale studio production, he has repeatedly brought authority and lived-in detail to supporting roles. It is the kind of career that rewards looking beyond the marquee names and paying attention to the actors who help make a movie’s world feel complete.
