Adrienne Barbeau
Adrienne Barbeau has built the kind of career that resists being reduced to a single medium. Born in Sacramento in 1945, she began in musical theatre, making her Broadway debut in the chorus of Fiddler on the Roof before taking over the role of Hodel. She went on to appear in more than 25 plays and musicals, with her performance as Rizzo in Grease earning a Theater World Award and a 1972 Tony Award nomination. Television gave Barbeau one of her defining early roles: Carol Traynor, daughter of Bea Arthur’s title character on Maude. Running from 1972 to 1978, the series showcased the directness and comic confidence that would remain central to her screen presence. Barbeau could play tough without flattening a character, bringing humor, practicality and a sense that she was usually the most clear-eyed person in the room. Her first theatrical film appearance came in John Carpenter’s The Fog in 1980. The film helped establish her as a genre performer, and she followed it with Escape from New York, Creepshow and Swamp Thing. Those films made particularly good use of her grounded delivery: even when the material turned strange, violent or supernatural, Barbeau played the situation rather than winking at it. Her film work also extended into comedy, including The Cannonball Run, Back to School and Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death. Barbeau’s later career has continued across television, theatre, film and voice acting. She played Catwoman in Batman: The Animated Series and Gotham Girls, appeared in Carnivàle, General Hospital and Revenge, and voiced characters in games including God of War III, Halo 4 and Mad Max. She has also worked as a singer and writer, releasing a self-titled folk album in 1998 and an autobiography, There Are Worse Things I Could Do. Across all those forms, her appeal remains consistent: a strong voice, a sharp sense of character and a welcome refusal to play toughness as one-note.
