Adrien Brody
Adrien Brody has built a career around characters who rarely seem entirely at ease. His watchful screen presence can suggest vulnerability, tension or quiet calculation, qualities that have served him across intimate dramas, large-scale adventures, science fiction and sharply stylised comedy. Born on April 14, 1973, in Woodhaven, Queens, Brody took acting classes as a child and was appearing in an Off-Broadway play and a PBS television film by thirteen. Before that, he performed magic at children’s birthday parties as “The Amazing Adrien,” an early taste of holding an audience’s attention. His supporting role in Steven Soderbergh’s King of the Hill became a breakthrough, followed by an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Restaurant and notable work in Terrence Malick’s The Thin Red Line and Spike Lee’s Summer of Sam. Roman Polanski cast him as the lead in The Pianist after seeing his work in Harrison’s Flowers. Brody prepared by withdrawing from public life, giving up his apartment and car, losing 30 pounds and taking intensive piano lessons. His performance won the Academy Award for Best Actor and a César Award. At 29, he became the youngest Best Actor winner in Academy Awards history and remains the only winner under thirty. Rather than stay in one register, Brody moved through markedly different parts: an aspiring ventriloquist in Dummy, Noah Percy in The Village, war veteran Jack Starks in The Jacket, writer Jack Driscoll in King Kong and Peter Whitman in Wes Anderson’s The Darjeeling Limited. He later played Royce in Predators, Salvador Dalí in Midnight in Paris and the villainous Dmitri in Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel. His portrayal of Harry Houdini in the miniseries Houdini earned an Emmy nomination. In 2024, Brody took the lead role of Hungarian-Jewish Holocaust survivor László Tóth in Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist. The performance brought him another Academy Award, along with BAFTA, Golden Globe and Critics Choice wins. Across those varied roles, Brody’s strength remains his ability to make unease, concentration and restraint feel active rather than merely internal.
