Adrian Pasdar

Adrian Pasdar has built a career around characters whose confidence often conceals something more complicated. Born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, in 1965, he initially attended the University of Florida on a football scholarship. An injury redirected him toward acting, an interest he had already pursued in high school and campus stage productions. After working behind the scenes at People’s Light and Theatre Company, he attended the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute in New York City. Pasdar was 19 when he auditioned for Top Gun, prompting director Tony Scott to create the small role of Chipper for him. Larger film parts followed in Solarbabies and Streets of Gold, but his defining early performance came as Caleb Colton in Kathryn Bigelow’s cult vampire film Near Dark. Pasdar gave the movie a vulnerable center, playing a young man pulled between ordinary life and the dangerous new world closing around him. He later appeared as Frankie in Brian De Palma’s Carlito’s Way. Television offered Pasdar an especially good home for his controlled, quietly ambiguous presence. He played the title character in Profit, anthropology professor Declan Dunn in Mysterious Ways and David McClaren in Judging Amy. As Nathan Petrelli in Heroes, he leaned into the shifting morality of a politician caught up in a superhero story. Further television roles included Alec Rybak in The Lying Game, Randall Burke in Burn Notice, Nolan Burgess in Colony and Morgan Edge in Supergirl. His connection to comic-book storytelling extends well beyond Heroes. Pasdar played Glenn Talbot, later Graviton, on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and voiced Hawkeye, Captain America and Iron Man across several animated Marvel productions. Pasdar has also worked behind the camera. He wrote and directed the short film Beyond Belief, then directed the 1999 independent feature Cement, an art-house neo-noir conceived as a contemporary retelling of Othello. That movement between film, television, voice work and directing gives his career an unusual shape, while his strongest roles share a taste for authority figures whose certainty may not be as solid as it first appears.
