Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje is an English actor, screenwriter and director whose screen career has often made striking use of his imposing physical presence. Born in Islington on 22 August 1967 to Nigerian parents of Yoruba origin, he was raised largely by a white working-class foster family in Tilbury. His childhood brought questions of identity, belonging and cultural dislocation that would later inform his work behind the camera. Before acting, Akinnuoye-Agbaje earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of London and a master’s in law from King’s College London. A job in a clothes shop introduced him to modelling, and that career eventually took him to Hollywood. He made his film debut in Congo in 1995, beginning a body of work that has moved freely between television drama, action films, fantasy and comic-book adaptations. His defining television roles include Simon Adebisi, the formidable inmate at the centre of some of Oz’s most intense material, and Mr. Eko in Lost. Both characters benefited from Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s ability to suggest force, intelligence and an interior life that could not be reduced to physical menace. He later appeared as Malko in Game of Thrones and guest-starred in Monk. On film, his roles have ranged from Hitu in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls and Lock-Nah in The Mummy Returns to appearances in The Bourne Identity, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and The Thing. He entered two major superhero worlds as Kurse in Thor: The Dark World and Killer Croc in Suicide Squad, bringing weight and presence to characters transformed by extensive genre design. Akinnuoye-Agbaje turned to his own history with Farming, which he wrote and directed. The autobiographical film drew on the practice of Nigerian children being fostered by white British families and won the Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature at the Edinburgh Film Festival. It marked a natural expansion of a career shaped not only by commanding performances, but by a sustained interest in identity and the stories behind outward appearances.
