Adam Sandler

Adam Sandler has built a career around a useful contradiction: audiences know exactly what kind of energy he can bring, yet his best performances still find ways to redirect it. The looseness, sudden temper and wounded vulnerability of his comedy can play as broad farce or something far more unsettling, depending on the movie around him. Born in Brooklyn on September 9, 1966, Sandler grew up in Manchester, New Hampshire, and graduated from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in 1988 with a degree in acting. After early television and film work, he joined Saturday Night Live as a writer in 1990 and became a featured player the following year. His original songs, including “The Thanksgiving Song” and “The Chanukah Song,” helped establish the mix of music, character comedy and disarming sincerity that would follow him into movies. Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore turned that comic persona into a leading-man formula, while The Wedding Singer gave it a warmer romantic shape. Big Daddy, The Waterboy, 50 First Dates and Click helped sustain a long run of commercially successful comedies. Sandler also formed Happy Madison Productions in 1999, becoming a producer as well as a performer and writer across much of his subsequent work. The more interesting story, though, is how filmmakers have used the tension already present in his comedy. Paul Thomas Anderson wrote Punch-Drunk Love with Sandler in mind, drawing out the loneliness and volatility beneath his familiar screen persona; the performance earned Sandler a Golden Globe nomination. He later moved into similarly serious territory with Reign Over Me, The Meyerowitz Stories and the Safdie brothers’ Uncut Gems, winning the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead for the latter. Sandler has continued moving between comedy, drama, animation and stand-up, including Hustle, Leo, Spaceman and the special Adam Sandler: Love You. Whether playing a reckless man-child, a desperate gambler or a weary basketball scout, he remains most compelling when humor and hurt occupy the same frame.
