Adam Goldberg

Adam Goldberg has made a career out of characters who rarely seem content to sit quietly in the background. Often sharp-edged, sarcastic or wise-cracking, his performances bring a restless energy to both comedy and drama—even when he is working within an ensemble. Born in Santa Monica on October 25, 1970, Goldberg landed his first major screen role in Billy Crystal’s Mr. Saturday Night in 1992. The following year, he played Mike Newhouse in Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused. One of his defining film roles came as the tough-talking infantryman Stanley Mellish in Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan. Goldberg has also taken leading roles in The Hebrew Hammer, 2 Days in Paris and (Untitled), though much of his screen career has been shaped by distinctive character work. That includes Jerry in The Prophecy, Sol in A Beautiful Mind and Denny in Déjà Vu. His television appearances show the same knack for making an impression without needing to be the conventional centre of attention. He played Eddie, Chandler’s erratic roommate, in a three-episode Friends arc, and later appeared in Joey. In the first season of Fargo, he portrayed Mr. Numbers, one half of a hit-man team, learning American Sign Language for the role. Further regular and supporting parts followed in The Jim Gaffigan Show, Taken, God Friended Me and The Equalizer. Goldberg’s work extends well beyond acting. He wrote, produced, directed and edited the features Scotch and Milk, I Love Your Work and No Way Jose. A multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, he has also composed and arranged music for screen projects, released albums under the names LANDy and The Goldberg Sisters, and contributed voice performances to Babe: Pig in the City, Homeward Bound II and A Monster in Paris. That range makes his career feel less like a single track than a collection of connected creative pursuits, with acting remaining its most visible thread.
