Ada Nicodemou

Ada Nicodemou has built a screen career around warmth, resilience and the kind of familiarity that comes from spending years with a character. Born on 14 May 1977 in Carlton, she grew up in Minto in a Greek Cypriot family whose roots are in Limassol. At the Johnny Young Talent School, she learned to sing, dance and act—skills that helped her enter television while still a teenager. Nicodemou was 16 when she successfully auditioned to play Katerina Ioannou in Heartbreak High. What began as a 12-week contract was extended, giving her an early foothold in one of Australian television’s defining school dramas. She followed it with the role of receptionist Anastasia “Ana” Skouras in Police Rescue and a starring part in Breakers, showing an ease within ensemble casts and continuing stories. Her film work includes a small but recognisable turn as Dujour in The Matrix in 1999. The following year brought the role most closely associated with her career: Leah Patterson in Home and Away. Nicodemou had originally auditioned for a different part in the series in 1992, but producers later approached her directly about Leah. An initial six-month contract was soon extended, and she has played the character since March 2000. That sustained run has made her a deeply familiar presence in Australian television drama. Nicodemou has also stepped beyond scripted acting. She won the third season of Dancing with the Stars in 2005 with partner Aric Yegudkin and later returned with him for Dancing with the Stars: All Stars. She hosted the reality series Please Marry My Boy from 2012 and made a guest appearance in Drop Dead Weird in 2018. Her work also extends to children’s books. Johnas The International Soccer Star was released in 2018, while Mia Megastar, loosely based on her path to becoming an actor, followed in 2024. Across television, film and other projects, Nicodemou’s career has been defined by longevity, versatility and a strong connection with Australian audiences.
